Hobie Fleet 23 of Dallas and Division 14 sailors collaborated with the Hobie Class Association of North America to organize this Texas sized regatta. With Lupe Tortilla, a Texas Tex-Mex restaurant group as our title sponsor, the event was destined for some Texas flavor. And the event organizers and sponsors did not disappoint. The sponsor and organizers planned a big Texas welcome and continued to deliver regatta excellence throughout the weeklong October event.
There were 22 skippers vying for the title of North American Champion. Our host venue, Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club (DCYC) provided grassy rigging area, clubhouse, swimming pool and facilities with showers. As always, DCYC members’ hospitality was outstanding, with many club members joining the evening parties and enhancing the festivities.
Regatta registration bags included t-shirts, embroidered jackets, tumblers and other goodies. The boats were decaled with Lupe Tortilla stickers thanks to Chase 1 Captain, Jane Sherrod. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were available each day, with the Lupe Tortilla food truck delivering breakfast tacos, and culminating in the catered Awards Dinner on Friday Night.
There were many first-time NAC competitors in attendance. Some hoped only to finish the races, while others wanted to be top in their local group. First timers included Laura Barron (MS), Baxter Scarberry (KS), Dennis Scarberry (KS) and Chris Oneil (KS). Congratulations and thanks to each of you for sailing your first championship!
There were three women competitors, Robbin Mocarski & Sheila Holmes including Laura Barron.
Grittier competitors included Mark Ralph (2021 NAC Champion), Herb James (fresh from H16 Worlds), Wolfgang Kornwebel, Bill Jeffers and Bart Beck (2022 H17 Champion) to name a few. Adam Atherton drove the double Florida boats hours after Hurricane Ian hit his area.
Local PRO and former Hobie sailor, Bob Johnson, managed 6 races in challenging wind conditions. The after-effects of Hurricane Ian sucked away Texas’ normal Fall winds, testing the sailors’ light air skills. Although the gusty Fall winds didn’t deliver the anticipated fun, the evening festivities made up the shortfall, starting with the Saturday night regatta party and ending on Friday night with the Lupe Tortilla Challenge awards dinner.
Congratulations to Jason Sanchez, our 2022 Hobie 14 North American Champion.
